Gameplay
The Opening: A Darker, Larger-Scale Conflict
Hotline Miami 2 continues the story begun in the first game. However, it does so on a much larger scale and in a darker tone. From the very first minutes, you’ll be immersed in a chaotic and brutal atmosphere, where Jacket and Beard find themselves at the center of a fierce conflict. Unfortunately, their attempt to break through enemy defenses ends in defeat at the hands of Russian paratroopers. Consequently, this event becomes a turning point, as it soon becomes clear that the enemy forces haven’t simply retreated, but rather have chosen a new strategic location—the Power Plant—to be the target of a devastating explosion. In a desperate act, Beard saves Jacket from certain death, and then the narrative abruptly shifts to San Francisco in the mid-1980s.
Fragmented Narrative and a Different Reality
In contrast to a linear storyline, the second part presents the plot in fragments, creating a sense of déjà vu. Specifically, it’s as if the events of the first game are repeating themselves, yet in a different reality. Jacket, already known as the man who destroyed the Russian mafia, is nevertheless revealed in this story from an unexpected side. For example, he appears as a US military paratrooper caught in the epicenter of the Cold War, which in the game’s world has expanded far beyond political threats. Meanwhile, the conflict escalates into a full-scale military clash, so the action shifts to Hawaii. According to the plot, the islands are the center of a fierce confrontation between American troops and Soviet forces. Ultimately, this is where the real action begins, and the outcome of the story will depend on you.
Rising Mafia Power and Returning Characters
As a result of the conflict, the defeat of the American army becomes an international sensation. Against this backdrop, the influence of the Russian mafia in the United States grows, operating with virtual impunity. To counter this threat, Jacket and a group of twelve fighters from the organization “50 Blessings” must eliminate the criminal syndicate that has grown after the war. In addition, familiar and new characters appear: the Nazis Jake and Richter with their unique masks; the Butcher, the prototype for the hero of the first game; and finally Ash, whose story is closely intertwined with Jacket’s, since their storylines are identical. Moreover, masks remain an important element of gameplay, each unlocking special abilities or enhancing certain character stats.
Plot
The game’s plot structure is intentionally fragmented. The narrative is told from the perspectives of various characters. More specifically, from fans emulating Jacket, detectives, and the writer who chronicles the events. This perspective is one of the reasons for the fragmented presentation of the story. In the second part, you’ll control several characters, each offering their own perspective on the events. Wrong Number isn’t just a sequel.
